About This Creature
A medium to large butterfly with a wingspan ranging from 55 to 70 mm. It has bright, vibrant yellow wings with characteristic dark margins on the tips of the forewings, clearly visible in flight and when resting.
Physical Characteristics
Slender body typical of butterflies, two pairs of broad wings covered in microscopic scales providing bright yellow coloration, dark brown or black borders along the outer margins of the forewings, compound eyes, and a long coiled proboscis for feeding on nectar.
Behavior & Temperament
Diurnal and highly active flier with a fast, erratic flight pattern. Often migrates in large numbers during the fall and spring. Solitary as caterpillars but gather at damp soil or mud-puddles to drink moisture and minerals.
Habitat & Diet
Origin Region
North, Central, and South America, ranging from the southern United States down to Argentina, occasionally migrating northward into Canada.
Habitat
Open spaces, woodland edges, gardens, parks, roadsides, and cultivated areas. Aerial and terrestrial during larval stages.
Diet & Nutrition
Herbivorous/Nectarivorous as adults, feeding on nectar from a wide variety of flowers including hibiscus, lantana, and goldenrod. Caterpillars feed strictly on the leaves of host plants in the pea family (Fabaceae), such as senna and partridge pea.
Lifespan & Health
Adult butterflies typically live for several weeks to a few months, varying by generation and migration patterns. Predators include birds, spiders, and praying mantises. Complete metamorphosis includes egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult stages.
Special Characteristics
Strong migrant capable of flying long distances. Exhibits strong sexual dimorphism in some forms, though males are typically bright yellow while females can have heavier dark borders and occasional dark spots on the wings.
Ecological Information
Acts as an important pollinator for various flowering plants. Caterpillars serve as a food source for insectivorous birds and small predators, contributing significantly to local woodland and garden food webs.
